The Women’s institute first originated in Canada. A Canadian representative spoke at a conference held in Bangor in 1915 which inspired those present to become more involved in the war effort, which resulted in the birth of the WI with in the UK.
The initial aim of the WI was to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in food production in the First World War.
The WI developed over the years to become involved with numerous projects, expanding into urban areas.
The WI grew in popularity in Wales but in the mid 1960’s members in Gwynedd became unhappy with its predominantly English character and broke away and formed Merched y Wawr – a Welsh language organisation.
Harlech group has 32 members, three of whom are dual members.
